|Bill Brett – The Garden Guru
Bill Brett was raised on a dairy farm in Taranaki. Enthusiastic gardening parents germinated his interest. He joined Ivon Watkins Ltd as a trainee, studied at University, and went on to become the North Island Technical Officer.
After leaving Ivon Watkins-Dow, Bill, spent time in Ministry of Agriculture Bio Security, and managed NZ’s first advanced tree nursery, before joining Yates as the technical officer. Bill was responsible for the 60th Edition re-write of the Yates Garden Guide. He later became manager of the Yates NZ Home Garden Division.
Following 18 months with Botanix Garden Centre Group in Auckland, Bill was approached by Mitre 10, to set up and manage the garden division.
Five years later, in 1995 Bill set up Brett & Associates, a garden centre consultancy, and within three years had many clients in NZ, Australia, Ireland and UK. In 2011, Garden Retail Success Ltd, took over the business of Brett & Associates and Bill retired from garden centre consultancy, but still helps with the occasional project.
|Temple Larkin - Vegetables
I love growing vegetables.
I have been growing my own vegetables for about 20 years, and I enjoy that I am still learning and always will be.
I love to wander out before mealtime and let the garden help dictate what I will eat that night.
The joy of seeing a seed that I planted poke through the soil or a fruit begin to bear always brings a smile to my face, such a simple pleasure that is so rewarding.
I have just recently moved and I love exploring the new microclimates, soils and idiosyncrasies of my new property.
|Bryce Senior - Landscaping
Hi, I’m Bryce. My background is D.I.Y gardening, and you will often find me out in the garden building, shaping or maintaining my property.
My contribution to the Nelson Gardener will be through topics based around low maintenance gardening, developing smaller spaces, and providing general gardening advice for Nelson based residents.
My favorite part about gardening is creating landscapes that represent the area and house it surrounds whilst adding my additional touches which gives the whole area a personality.
I look forward to seeing down at 55 Saxton Road for a chat.
|Simon Kemp - Fruits
Hi, I'm Simon.
My passion in gardening is about getting the most out of the plants and ground in a sustainable away. My knowledge is mainly based in the horticulture industry in which I help vineyards and orchards make the most out of their fruit and land.
I enjoy seeing the transformations of plants when they get their necessary nutrients and finally seeing a delicious fruit as the end product.
My contribution to the Nelson Gardener will be through providing information such as tips and tricks to help your own fruits thrive.
