Product Calculator

Bark and Soil Calculator

A handy tool to ensure you get the perfect amount you need to complete your landscaping project.

We've all been there. Finishing up a project and having a huge pile of product leftover, or simply being a little bit short which means another trip for a small amount.  Wholesale Landscapes understands that it's best to get things right the first time around, so have developed a useful landscaping and garden calculator to ensure you get the right amount, the first time around

How deep should my bark, compost, soil, gravel or stones be?

Soil depth: Typically you need a finishing layer of screened soil of 100mm when working with an uneven surface. 100mm of soil will allow to even out any hollows and give enough depth to create a flat surface

Compost depth:  A general rule for compost is to allow for the depth of the current root structure of your plants with an additional 30-50% to mix in with the base. If you're planting into holes or filling up a vege garden  you will need to accommodate for this prior to filling up

Bark depth: We recommend 100mm (10cm) deep for new bark gardens and planting into bare areas. For existing gardens with some cover, we recommend 75mm-100mm (7.5cm-10cm)

Note: Barked areas for playground impact protection need to meet NZS5828:2015 standards and is calculated on the fall areas and the height of the playground. Please contact us to discuss your barked playground areas

Gravel & stones depth: For paths and driveways which are often exposed to car and foot traffic, we recommend 100mm-125mm (10cm-12.5cm) on newly prepared areas due to settling of product.

This excludes preparation, compaction or drainage gravel underneath. For existing areas 75mm thickness is recommended for areas needing a small top-up.

Width =  Length =   Units

Depth =   Units

Total =  (Cubic Metres)

Be mindful some compaction will occur with soil and
compost products. Allow up to 20% for compacting in garden beds etc.

Odd Shaped Area?

Try this:

  1. Make a rough drawing of your area
  2. Divide that area into sections. Choose dividing lines that will create something close to rectangles. Close is good enough.
  3. Use the calculator above to determine the amount required for each section, and then just add them together.

Or use the reference tables below to help work out the quantities required

Simply measure the width and length of the area you need to cover  eg. 8m x 2m

Then, work out how deep you need the product.

1cm .010   10cm .100
2cm .020   15cm .150
3cm .030   20cm .200
4cm .040   25cm .250
5cm .050   30cm .300
6cm .060   50cm .500

1" Inch thick .025mm   7" Inch thick .175mm
2" Inch thick .050mm   8" Inch thick .200mm
3" Inch thick .075mm   9" Inch thick .225mm
4" Inch thick .100mm   10" Inch thick .250mm
5" Inch thick .125mm   11" Inch thick .275mm
6" Inch thick .150mm   12" Inch thick .300mm

8m x 5m @ 2" thick
8 x 5 x .050 = 2m³ Needed

20m x 6m @ 6" thick
20 x 6 x .150 = 18m³ Needed
